Herb Planters

So you love herb planters and gardens but live in apartment, or can’t get outdoors right now for some reason? No matter. There are ways to grow herbs indoors with a little bit of help and a good planter.

The first thing you will need is a good, sunny windowsill to make sure your herbs will get 5 to 6 hours of sun per day. Then you need a good herb planter; many people choose planters that are narrow but long and fit along the sill. Although you can get one from your local nursery, you can often find better prices on the internet if you can wait a few days for it to be shipped.

Your herb garden design should take into consideration the height and width of the plants. For an indoor herb planter, you don’t want plants that will grow too tall. Wide plants can be accommodated in other types
of planters if you have the space for them, but most people do not have a windowsill that has space for several herb gardens.

Also purchase a good potting mix. It should be soilless to help avoid disease, but does not need to contain a chemical plant’s worth of fertilizer. You can–and should–add the fertilizer yourself if possible so
that you can regulate it according to what your plants seem to need and you can use the proper fertilizer for plants that you will eat.

Herb garden design should be visually pleasing as well as efficient. Arrange your plants so that you can turn the herb planters once or twice a week–your plants will grow towards the sun and should have the opportunity to get it on both sides.

Here are some other necessities for your garden:

• Small scissors to trim the tiny plants and encourage more healthy growth.
• Plant lights for winter time or for homes that do not have the required sunny windowsill.
• Small water mister–herbs do not like wet feet, so water in moderation and mist the plant now and then.
• Make sure fertilizer is for use with edible plants.
• Use soilless potting mix instead for soil for the health of your plants.
• Only begin using your herbs once you have given them time to get accustomed to your home and start growing new shoots and leaves.

Once you get started, you will realize that growing herbs indoors is not only easy, but makes your home smell good. It also takes your cooking up a notch, as you and your family and guests will find out after the first use.
